The Bristol faire is intentionally set up as more of a living history scenario. They do not encourage interaction as a general rule, it is a "come and watch us be renaissance" faire. I make no comment on the validity of this as a performance, but I assure you it is intentional. I have not been to the faire but know many who frequent it. What you saw is just their general Modus Operandi.
:-) Personally, I like my interactive theater, but there are clearly other choices!
